Population kinetics of drugs

Objective: to understand diverse aspects of the kinetics of some drugs, in particular that of iohexol, which is the medication we use to evaluate GFR in our studies. Prof Asberg has developed a method in his lab to analyze the kinetics of iohexol using Bayesian approaches. We wanted to analyze the procedure, advantages and limitations.

In our laboratory, with the collaboration of Sergio Luis Lima (Biochemist), Federico González (Software developer) we developed a simple method to measure GFR with the clearance of iohexol-DBS. Moreover, we are simplifying the procedure, in particular, we are trying now to reduce the number of points that need to be taken in patients with reduced renal function i.e. < 30 ml/min. In these subjects the test last 8 hours. This is burdensome for some patients.

So, we are trying to make the procedure short: up to 6 hours in this particular condition. Prof. Asberg has developed  a method in which he reduced the time of the procedure. In our stay we showed to his lab our approach and observed his methods. We also discussed possible collaborations, where we will offer our dataset of 5000 pk curves to be tested in their program.

Of utmost importance, we discussed the advantages and flaws of both methods: his and ours in reflecting the PK of iohexol.
