Third Staff Exchange – 2023
Lipidomics Analisis
Visiting the Lipidomics Core Facility at the Danish Cancer Institute
In September 2023, we visited the Lipidomics Core Facility at the Danish Cancer Institute, located in Copenhagen, Denmark. There we met with Dr. Mesut Bilgin to discuss the analysis of kidney samples from animal models of chronic kidney disease (CKD) through Shotgun Lipidomics. This method allows the global monitoring of the mammalian lipidome including more than 600 lipid species and 32 lipid classes, which would greatly contribute to quantitatively detect imbalances in the lipid metabolism associated with the pathogenesis of CKD.
During the same time, we visited Dr. Christian Janfelt’s lab at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Copenhagen, to perform the analysis of mouse kidney samples using Desorption Electro-Focused Flow Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging (DEFFI-MSI). This method makes possible the simultaneous and accurate detection of hundreds of lipids across a tissue cryo-section, useful to visualize and localize lipid alterations linked to CKD in fresh kidney samples.
